Looking at various industries in today's society , individual career development paths can be broadly categorized into four groups : low management, low skills ; high management, low skills ; low management, high skills ; and high management, high skills. This is especially true in the IT industry. Of these four career paths , only low management and low skills are likely to be eliminated by society ; the other three undoubtedly offer their own advantages.
High management , low skills – this is what we usually call the management path ! In the IT industry , many successful people in this direction are project managers, project directors, and even top management in companies . However , pursuing this path also requires technical accumulation , because a manager's influence includes not only the power granted by their position but also their personal character and professional competence in their field , the latter being technical skill ! The computer industry itself also determines the significant impact of technical foundation on career development . Therefore , young IT professionals who want to design this path for their careers should not only accumulate appropriate technical skills but also consciously cultivate their management qualities.
Low-management , high-skill , is the so-called technical route ! The IT industry is technology-driven , and for those who enjoy delving into and exploring technology , this route is a good choice—allowing them to go deep and thorough ! However, due to differing perceptions of technology and management in China , many people believe that technical work is unprofitable and undervalued , mistakenly believing they are merely engineers whose work only assists in the company's operations. In reality , in developed countries in Europe and America , senior technical personnel command very high salaries and have long careers . In giant companies like Microsoft and IBM , there are many senior programmers or system architects over 50 years old , and their salaries are comparable to those of senior managers ! Another undeniable fact is that companies have a limited number of management positions , and some excellent technical personnel are unwilling or unsuitable for management roles . Therefore , the emergence of senior technical experts ( or similar positions ) provides an upward path for those who love technology.
A high-management , high-skill approach , particularly in consulting, represents a relatively balanced and comprehensive career path , and is often the direction companies hope their employees will strive for. However, surveys show that due to various practical constraints , approximately 90% of individuals develop along either the management or specialist paths . Very few actually reach a significant level in consulting . Moreover , even among these few who do achieve a certain level of expertise in consulting , limitations in company resources often prevent them from fully realizing their personal value, leading them to leave their companies and become professional trainers or consultants . Some internationally renowned consulting firms, such as McKinsey, Arthur Andersen, and others , serve as a development path for individuals to further break through career bottlenecks at a certain stage of their professional lives .
